I have high hopes from Bilal Lashari's modern takd on cult classic Maula Jatt, been looking forward to it since it was announced way back in 2013. Still a lot if low-effort and propaganda ones being churned out. I liked Bol better because of the better production values and acting, story and screenplay of KKL is definitely better, a change of pace would have done it great favor, still there's no denying that it's one of the finest products of Pakistani cinema.Īnd I agree that quality of our movies is getting better, wise filmmakers are stepping in as we saw with the release of Cake and Motorcycle girl. Yes there were multiple subplots going on in there and Fawad's one was the best, Shaan's subplot was the second best as it highlighted the very important issue of racism faced by Muslims in the aftermath of 9/11. Nowadays, I guess you could watch most of the Eid releases and say they're "ok" films. With the exception of one or two films, you couldn't watch them because they were boring with horrible humour. Actor in Law got a bit OTT at times with that first court case and a love story that came out of nowhere but the premise was interesting. If they had focused on the first arc of the story, it could have been better. Acting-wise, it was fine and it was visually pleasing to look at.
Punjab would have been better off as a drama since it was a looongg watch, had more songs than necessary, and an unnecessary scene that left a bad taste in my mouth. While I wouldn't say these were the "best" movies I've ever seen, but I found Punjab Nahi Jaungi and Actor in Law to be an entertaining one-time watch. Dukhtar is good- it didn't need the love angle there but the mother/daughter relationship was sweet. I thought that Khuda Kay Liye was better than Bol mostly because of Fawad's arc. However, I have heard mighty praise from Hollywood critics for 2014 release Dukhtar, which has 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes and 73% on Metacritic. Rest I have seen are all crap, those I didn't, can't say anything about them. Khuda ke Liye has a very good script but average and sometimes really bad production values, some scenes have not-so-good acting but as a whole this movie works, the last in my top 3. O21 is a hidden gem, which flopped upon release because cinemagoers here aren't used to such intelligent movies, best action movie of Pakistan and no 2 on my list. In my opinion BOL is the best Pakistani movie ever made, not only is its production values really good but the story is top-notch too. Bollywood on the other hand produces a fair share of junkyard crap but every year there are also many quality movies with great artistic brilliance. Pakistani movies are really really terrible about 99% of the time but every once in a blue moon a decent one comes out.
